Job Summary

Under the supervision of Manager / Director / Certified Child Life Specialist, the Child Life Assistant is responsible for supporting infants, children, youth, and families by providing developmentally appropriate activities including therapeutic play, preparation and education as directed / developed by professional Child Life staff.

• This position operates between the hours of Monday - Friday 8 : 00am - 5 : 00pm with additional open weekend availability*
• Workload may fluctuate week to week*

Reports to : Child Life Specialist / Director, PICU

Job Specific Responsibilities

Daily assignments may include but are not limited to :

• Facilitate patient interaction in collaboration with the Child Life Specialist; Responsible for sharing significant information regarding patient needs / response with Child Life Specialists and other healthcare professionals when appropriate.
• Support Playroom / Play : Includes maintaining safe and clean environment ensuring toys, books, supplies, and materials are clean and in safe conditions according to protocol and infection prevention control practices
• Provide training and directions to volunteers
• Assist with special events, visitors, groups, and donation inquiries, delivery / pick-up, organization, and storage
• Performs all other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED
• 1 year prior experience working with children in group setting, preferably in healthcare setting
• Experience providing developmentally appropriate activities including therapeutic play, preparation and education is a plus

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations

CPR certification or BLS must be attained within 12 months from date of hire

Skills and Abilities

• Able to champion national standards of care for the Geriatric population, specific to delirium prevention.
• Ability to demonstrate commitment to the mission and vision of UMC Health System, upholding the Standards of Excellence.
• Strong background knowledge of child growth and development
• Ability to support family-centered care through communication and involvement of parents and other family members.
• Possess the interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate with patients, families, and staff.

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

This position will interact closely with nursing staff, patients and their family members, and other department and hospital staff throughout the hospital

Physical Capabilities

Work may frequently require standing, walking, lifting, and transporting of supplies. Work is of medium demand. Speaking and hearing to converse with staff members, are required.

Adequate hand / eye coordination and fine motor skills are required. Near visual acuity is required to work with charts and records.

Environmental Working Conditions :

Works in well-lighted, heated, ventilated building. Hours may vary to accommodate needs in the department. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is of low risk.

May be required to work in areas other than primary assignment.
